It heralds the arrival of the birth of Christ with the singing of carols through the cold winter nights. The Christmas season begins three weeks before the actual day with the Advent season. On the three Sundays before Christmas one red or green candle is lit on each Sunday and on Christmas day a white candle is lit. This lighting of candles signifies that the birth of Christ brought light into this world and that light dispelled the darkness. As the Bible tells us “In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. “ (John 1: 4) Jesus was that true light. There are several traditions associated with Christmas that are followed across the world. In Northern Europe where the winters are harsh a heavy log called the Yule log is decorated with ribbons and greenery and then set alight to burn for three days at Christmas. In Russia and Israel the orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on 6th December and not the 25th. Carol singers go outside in the biting cold at nights to sing carols and are graciously offered plum cakes and puddings in Christian homes. In Germany people go to the Night church service on Christmas Eve and exchange presents as they come back home. Opening presents at Christmas is another custom that is eagerly awaited by the young and old alike. Christmas puddings are made with dry fruits and soaked in rum and set alight to be put at the centre of the table with other Christmas goodies. How can one forget Santa Claus who brings gifts for children at Christmas? Parents remind their children to be good through the year so that they may get a present from Father Christmas. Santa Claus is based on St. Nicholas who was the bishop of Mayer in Asia Minor. He was a wealthy man who was generous to the poor and gave them gifts. The legend of Santa Claus started from Netherland where he is called ‘Sinterklaas’. In Christian homes you would sometimes find the mistletoe on doorways at Christmas. It is a round leafy plant that grows on apple trees. It is also symbolic of the crown of thorns that Jesus was made to wear at His crucifixion, the red berries on the mistletoe are symbolic of the drops of blood that oozed out of His head when the crown was thrust down on Him. The Christmas season is celebrated for twelve days till the 6th of January. It ends with the Epiphany which celebrates the showing of the infant Jesus to the three wise men or the three Magi, who came bearing gifts, to pay their respects to Him. In Christian homes across the world the birth of Christ is celebrated at Christmas with fervor, joy and cheer for it is the spirit of Christmas that binds people to be drawn to their friends and families in the trueness of their hearts and spirits. This is a time to forgive one another and join together in thanksgiving and praise for the coming of God upon the earth in the likeness of human flesh. People decorate their homes with tinsel and Christmas trees and bake scrumptious cakes that are devoured with relish all the way till January. People also love to bring over cakes to their friends and neighbors homes. Remember to greet people with a cheery ‘Merry Christmas’ on Christmas morning this year. Not hearing from a job firm after giving an interview, seeing a loved one suffering from an acute illness, fighting a protracted court battle over a period of time, there are many things that may lead us to despair and frustration. On the other hand one successful and promising attempt at something and we begin to do the next best thing that we know, we presume that henceforth all will go according to plan. We know that we cannot live our life according to a plan no matter how faultless our plan is or how skillfully we execute it, life has a plan of its own. But does this mean that we cease doing that which is good and philanthropic because our virtues are not reciprocated in the world? It is very easy to presume that because we bear good feelings for someone in our heart, that person would also feel the same for us. If that does not happen we begin to despair of that person. A life well lived is a life in which our convictions and inner voices of the heart are not drowned in outward clamours of confusion and despair. The character in Beckett’s play ‘Waiting for Godot” puts it down succinctly when he says “Despair and you are damned, presume and you are damned”. Buddhism speaks of the middle path in which one does not give in too much or take away too much, but wisely chooses a middle way. The right attitude toward money, for example, is to be neither a miser nor a spendthrift. The truly courageous person is neither cowardly nor reckless. The safe place is the middle ground; and in our case this means avoiding the despair of imagining that we cannot be saved and the presumption of imagining that we cannot be damned. In the Bible Jesus says “The light of the body is the eye, therefore if your eye be single, your whole body is filled with light, but if your eye be evil, your whole body is filled with darkness. Therefore if the light that is in you be darkness then how great is that darkness.” (Matthew 6:22, 23). When we close our eyes and open up the eyes of the heart, in the darkness within we can find the light to focus on the one true voice, the one good thought that takes us away from all presumptions and despairing. We will find it in ourselves to rise up to face the challenges with inner strength and conviction. If you keep your eye focused on the goal not allowing yourself to be dejected by repeated failure then your life is filled with hope and peace. Frustration and hopelessness take us down a wiry path whereas too much confidence is like a slippery slope. Perhaps the trick is to tune in to the inner frequency of the heart and soul and keep hope at close hand and despair at bay. Paul Young sings in his song Wonderland,”For all our worried weaknesses, all will be revealed and for all your troubled sweet nesses your troubles will be healed. I see you in your attitude of sorrow and demand. Close your eyes, close your eyes, oh let me take you back to wonderland.” If we can quite the murmurings of the mind and listen attentively to the intercessions of the soul, we will find that we have been internally manifested with great reserves of courage, hope, compassion and wisdom by the Creator. These are sufficient to live a trusting and contented life that is filled with faith in God and devoid of despair and presumptions.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03488478030249636649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6955021967814649525.post-896139919852494042013-08-09T00:26:50.911-07:002013-08-09T00:26:50.911-07:00The origin of sin according to the Bible in Genesi...The origin of sin according to the Bible in Genesis begins in a garden. Not just any garden but ‘The garden of Eden’. Adam the first man to be created by God and Eve the first woman were amply instructed that they could eat from the abundant fruit laden trees of this spectacular garden except from the two trees that carried the forbidden fruit. These trees were left unguarded nevertheless and unmanned as a symbol of the unshakable trust between God and his most prized creation. Later it was also to become an emblem of the universal freedom of choice that God accords to all humanity. Out of the two trees one was the ‘Tree of Life’ and the other ‘The Tree of Knowledge’. Adam and Eve did end up eating from the ‘Tree of Knowledge’ and immediately became aware of their own nakedness. This awareness was the first distinction they made between right and wrong. This is also marked as man’s first disobedience to God. When God found out what they had done, the trust that he had in his own creation was broken and they were duly evacuated from the Garden lest they rebel and eat from the Tree of Life also and become immortal as God. They were both cursed for their misdemeanor but spared their lives and a flaming sword was put in the East around the Tree of Life with two cherubims to guard it. Thus for the first time something was put under lock and key by the creator from his creation. From here onwards also began the human life of struggle, chaos and hardships. As the descendants of Adam and Eve we seemed to have lost out on the paradise that is the Garden of Eden and the prospect of a life that may have been free of toil and labor. What is lost is lost, but the one thing that we did gain was the discernment between good and bad, to be able to make a choice based on knowledge and distinction. We cannot say that we are naïve anymore or that we are not aware of the conflict between good and bad actions, thoughts and deeds. Armed as we have been with knowledge since centuries past, having eaten the fruit of knowledge, we have the choice to turn it into a blessing rather than a curse. By choosing Good over evil, Happiness over sorrow, Humility over pride, Love over hatred, Compassion over Arrogance we can choose to overcome that original act of rebellion and use the God given knowledge and wisdom to say no to things that cause strife and violence. Human life is a constant struggle between the spirit and the flesh. Our carnal desires very often triumph over our spiritual ones. To say that we are naturally inclined to good thinking, thoughts and practices is to be pompous and conceited besides it being untrue. Show me a virtuous man without even an iota of bad thoughts, words or deeds and I will show you a unicorn. As human beings we are always surrounded by temptations and vices. The struggle to overcome them is and has to be continuous, untiring and most importantly steeped in patience. It is not easy but we can prepare ourselves every day by being in stillness within ourselves and communing with God from whom we draw strength and endurance, to be prayer warriors always ready for battle against the nefarious attacks of evil. In life there is seldom victory and a constant struggle, but you can feel your life pulsating, throbbing and feel alive in the knowledge that God is on your side. It’s better than living a life devoid of meaning and one that is spiritually dead, anyway.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03488478030249636649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6955021967814649525.post-90572266727171627582013-06-25T06:24:12.420-07:002013-06-25T06:24:12.420-07:00 ... God in the center
In life a common complaint is that God has stopped listening to us. We keep whining about how he has covered his ears and that our prayers do not seem to reach him. People say ‘we pray every day but he just won’t listen’. It’s like he has covered himself with a cloud so that our supplications won’t reach him. Why is it that despite repeated reminders we don’t seem to benefit from his benevolence? What is it that we are not doing right, what is lacking in our efforts to appease him, to move him to compassion, to stir in him the mercies, the forgiveness and redemption that he has so graciously promised to us. A story that some of us have heard about a little girl comes to mind. The little girl was asked by her teacher to collect money for a relief project in school. She went from door to door in her locality with the piece of paper that asked people to contribute generously to the cause. She did so diligently every day. Towards the end of the week she paused to count her collection. It was still not up to the mark that her teacher had set for her to accomplish. She was very upset and kept thinking of ways to generate more funds. She went to her mother and asked, ‘where do all grown up people keep their money?’ The mother answered ‘in the bank’. The little girl had her brightest idea. Next day she went to the bank, and went straight up to the help desk. “I want money” she said. The woman at the desk smiled and directed her to the manager’s office. She entered the office and was asked by the manager to take a seat. She showed the piece of paper to the manager and said “Sir I want money, you are the manger of this bank please give me some money.” The manager smiled and put a five hundred rupee note on the table, next to it he put a coin. Take what you want he said to the girl. She sat there pondering for a while. She picked up the one rupee coin and got up to leave. She hesitated and slowly picked up the five hundred rupee note. “So you are taking both, asked the manager”? Sir my mother always says to wrap all things that are precious. She wrapped up the coin in the five hundred rupee note carefully, thanked the manager and left. There is plenty to learn from the little girl. Sometimes we forget to wrap God around our lives. When we pray, we ask amiss. We pray for wealth, health, a good job, love, protection etc. We forget that when we put God in the center of our lives then everything else will fall into place eventually. We lose the child within us. So ask like a child without ulterior motives, in all innocence, knowing that you will receive. Have complete trust like the little girl that he will not fail you. We cannot always be selfish and ask only for ourselves. We need to pray for others who are less fortunate and in need, in doing so we will heap many blessings upon our head. Take what is given without murmurings and disputations of the heart and wrap your blessings in God for they are precious. Our lives are precious, if we wrap God around our lives then we are covered by his grace and that grace is sufficient for us.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03488478030249636649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6955021967814649525.post-37382943017016874702013-06-17T03:25:22.977-07:002013-06-17T03:25:22.977-07:00Hi,

Time i... The sands of time
Time is a great healer, a great friend when it is on our side. It can as well be a commendable force to reckon with when we are on the low side of life. During hard times when the going gets tough and we find ourselves drowning in the choppy, turbulent waters in the sea of life the good thing is to hang in there and draw from the inner resources that will keep the heart, body and soul rooted together so that we don’t allow ourselves to get ravaged by the transitory desolation in our lives. In the good times we soak up the blessings of good health and happiness and the feeling of plenty. We are inwardly grateful and contended with our lives and think “God’s in heaven and all is right with our lives”. We run the risk of lulling ourselves into deceptive complacence. While it is good to enjoy the fruit of our labors in the rolling times while they last, let it not turn you into a conceited being. We are subconsciously aware of the transient nature of time, but sometimes allow ourselves to be tempted with its ingenuity rather than focusing on its life healing quality. In rough times its easy to let go of yourself and wallow in self pity and misery but, if life is like a river then allow yourself to go with the flow, sometimes we are allowed to take control and at other times that opportunity may be denied. Make peace with it and move on. We do not want hard times to come upon us for fear of being unable to cope with what we may encounter. Be sturdy and believe in yourself. Know that we are able to conquer the shadows when they close around us that the human spirit triumphs when we commend our souls to God. Time is also a great teacher, some lessons that we refuse to learn are thrust down upon us through hard times because we just won’t learn otherwise. These are important for our growth and spiritual elevation; they take us one step further on our journey through life. Learn to sniff out the happy moments in life. Do not allow their inconspicuousness make you miss them. We have a lot to be grateful for in every season of life for each season is a precursor to and leads to the next. It is only after a cruel and scorching summer that we are truly able to relish the cool showers that delight our soul. The bone chilling winter leads to the promise of spring and warmth. “To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heaven: ‘A time to be born and a time to die; a time to laugh and a time to cry’. (Bible, Ecclesiastes 3: 1, 3) Learn to appreciate both the good in life for it is the gift of God as well as the adverse time for it enriches, strengthens and heals us.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03488478030249636649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6955021967814649525.post-47546393031369973872013-04-17T05:55:50.120-07:002013-04-17T05:55:50.120-07:00There seem to be more gurus available than genuine...There seem to be more gurus available than genuine seekers. I would like to share my experience...Jai Mata Dee:

I would like to share my experience how i got ready to visit Vaishno DeviTemple.
For last 8 years I am associated with LAKSHMI NARAYAN TEMPLE in Thane and GURU MATA BRAHAMANANDMAYEE(AMMA) who composes and sings bhajan.
In the year 2007 one day I wanted to attend AMMA Bhajan which was there in my locality at the 12th floor of the building, when I reached the venue I came to know that there is no electricity and as its a new building they have not yet made the arrangement for the generator. As I had a slip disc few years back there was no question of climbing the stairs but I don't know what was that force which didn't allow me to return back home. Instead I thought I will chant JAI MATA DEE and will climb the stairs very slowly, atleast if not bhajan I will be able to have Amma's darshan. I reached 3rd floor by chanting Mata's name and was thinking that more 8 floors I have to climb and suddenly I could hear the voice of all devotees singing bhajan, I was little surprise that how I am able to hear the bhajan from 12th floor. I thought I am just imagining it and put my foot towards the 4th floor but to my surprise this time I could hear Amma's voice clearly. The first thing which came in my mind at that moment was that I must have taken the wrong address and the bhajan is going on at the third floor, I just turned back from the staircase and I found myself standing at the door where the bhajan was going on. As I was the last one to come, everybody were looking at me surprisingly but at that moment too I didn't relaize that something big has happened with me and I enjoyed the bhajan. At the end when it was over, before leaving I asked one gentleman, which floor it is, and to my shock of the life, I heard him telling it is 12th floor. I started to talking myself that how it is possible when I have climbed only three floors, while getting down too I came down with a speed.
There was no electricity when I reached home and I had a tough time to climb six floors (beacause of my back problem) in my building, but when I reached home I told my Husband(who was after me to visit vaishno Devi for last two years) that now I am ready to visit Vaishno Devi and I am
going to climb up and want to go to Mata ka Darbaar.

Since then every year my family visits Vaishno Devi Temple and seek HER blessings.GEETA SHIVAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05560781253324583970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6955021967814649525.post-12875842981449815562012-04-11T01:42:25.937-07:002012-04-11T01:42:25.937-07:00There is simple physics rule which says
